The Airport Extreme Time Capsule is an integrated, 2-terrabyte WIFI backup device used primarily with Apple Mac desktop and laptop computers. The Time Capsule is administered using the Apple Airport utility app included in MacOS. The Time Capsule may also be used to automatically backup Windows computers.
The Time Capsule can be your primary WIFI router or you can configure it to provide a secondary WIFI network that you only use for automated backups. The Time Capsule is easy to administer and does not require a lot of technical expertise. It is ideal for a home/dorm with one or two computers requiring automatic, periodic file-backup using the Time Machine app. Time Machine allows you to load any previously backed up version of a file or if you buy a new Mac computer you can transfer all your files from your last backup to your new computer.
The ethernet port closest to the power cord connects the Time Capsule to your ISP. Then you use the Airport Utility to create a primary or secondary WIFI network to which all your MacOs devices can connect. From the MacOS devices you use the Apple Time Machine (Settings->General) to specify your backup schedule for each Mac. You can backup your files every hour, day, or week. Initially it does a full backup of your Mac and then subsequently it follows your schedule preferences. Once set it creates backups automatically in the background. When you delete a file by mistake, you use the Apple Time Machine app to locate and restore your file.
There is a USB A port to which you may connect and share a printer or secondary device such as a disk. There are three other ethernet ports to which you can directly connect nearby computers to run at ethernet speed rather than WIFI speed for browsing.
