1957 Gibson Les Paul Special. A true piece of history that plays and sounds awesome. To be clear this is not a reissue, but a ‘57 Gibson. This is not just a collector’s piece or wall hanger – this is a player. Mahogany slab body, mahogany set neck, rosewood fretboard. It is 100% and needs nothing. No signs of repairs. The action is medium-low and there is absolutely no fret buzz anywhere on the neck. And believe or not, the initiation on every string is spot on at the 12th fret.
Full disclosure, the original pots are stamped as Sept of '57, so it’s possible the guitar is a '58 (which are exactly the same). The serial numbers in this time were just ink stamps on the back of the headstock and this guitar was refinished decades ago to match the cherry that came out in the 60s, so the serial number is gone. This was the original TV yellow (which all the 55-59s were) and the original yellow can still be seen in the control cavities. I tried to take photos from multiple angles in different lighting to try to capture the color and condition, but this really needs to be seen in person.
Original parts:
The hard shell case (worn and latches are rusty, but working), 3-way toggle (nice and tight), knobs, cavity covers, pickguard, strap buttons, truss rod cover, screws
Replacement parts:
MojoTone Quiet ’56 pickups (brand new), Kluson aluminum bridge (new, reliced), CTS pots/ PIO caps/ jack (all new and period correct), Graphtech Tusq nut (new, aged), period correct tuners
Boxed original parts:
Pots (don’t know if they’re working, but turn fine), Bumblebee caps (haven’t tested them), Nut, Jack, some service Receipts from 1981, Leo Quan Badass bridge (not original but was used on this guitar for many years)
Original pickups (boxed up):
The neck tests at 7.9 ohms and could use a replacement bobbin (may need to be serviced). The bridge pup is dead and the winding is unraveling, so it would need to be rebuilt (rewound & bobbin replaced at least). Both are all original including the screws and black plastic covers.
The 1955 to 1959 LP specials go for anywhere between $10k and $35k depending on condition, originality, ect. I set this firm low price of $7,750 because it was refinished in a non-original color (which brings the value down) and I don’t want to haggle with low ballers and time wasters. BTW, you could have it refinished in the original color and have the original pickups rebuilt... and it would be worth double what you bought it for.
It kills me to have to let it go, but my wife and I both just had major dental work and I need to raise money to cover the monster bills. The only trade I’d be interested in working out is for a ’95-‘04 Tacoma. No low ballers. No looky loos. Serious buyers only please.
