The Park Interpretive Specialist reporting location is La Purisima Mission State Historic Park, 2295 Purisima Road, Lompoc, CA 93436.
Duties include assisting the lead SP Interpreter l with the development and delivery of regularly scheduled traditional educational programs including guided tours, history programs and Junior Ranger programs as well as informal interpretive demonstrations. The incumbent will be responsible for working collaboratively with coworkers and with the Department’s PORTS Distance Learning Program to develop and deliver K-12 online virtual educational programs using a variety of online applications and platforms including Zoom and Teams. The incumbent will participate in local community outreach programs as well as staffing the visitor center.
The position will work between twenty-one (21) to twenty-eight (28) hours a week. Work hours will vary, and applicants must be able to work days, weekends, holidays and special events. The incumbent may work in other park units within Channel Coast District as directed.
Uniform:
A Department and District approved uniform is required to be worn during work hours.
CDL / Travel:
This position requires a valid California Class C driver’s license.
Occasional travel may be required. Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
Qualifications:
Education: Equivalent to graduation from college (1) with major work in natural sciences or human history, or (2) with major work in education with specialization in natural science or human history. Full-time paid work performing duties similar to those listed under "TYPICAL TASKS" above may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required education on the basis of one season (three months) of experience being equal to one year of education.
Ability to: Plan, organize, and conduct interpretive walks, tours, and campfire programs; plan and maintain exhibits and self-guided interpretive trails; organize material for presentation and address an audience effectively; prepare written material for reports and publication.
Personal Characteristics:
Demonstrated interest in outdoor life and natural history and human history; neat personal appearance; good communication skills in speaking and writing, work cooperatively with staff and volunteers; ability to stand for prolonged periods, and walk and carry up to 25 lbs; and work under varying weather conditions; be familiar with and operate digital devices for virtual programing and social media trends and content.
